Healthy Bites

Alphabetz Montessori recognizes that quality nourishment and healthy food choices are a part of everyday meal experience. Many pediatricians have shown that nutritious food leads to better attention span, enhanced learning and improved health.
Healthy foods are a hallmark of Montessori philosophy. In fact, Montessori was one of the first educators to recognize the connection between nutrition and the developing brain. An excellent explanation of how Montessori’s observations are supported by contemporary scientific understanding of brain development, by Montessori an and children’s nutritionist Jan Katzen-Luchenta, AMI, illustrates the link between nutrition and learning readiness.
“If teaching is to be effective with young children, it must assist them to advance on the way to independence. —Maria Montessori, The Discovery of the Child

Healthy Body & Mind

We place a lot of value on food served. Fresh cooked meals are served daily. Our child care food manager and staff ensure that all of the meals we serve meet the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
The menu includes a wide selection of the foods, and fresh fruits and vegetables are included with every lunch. We offer a 100% nut-free menu, and other allergy-sensitive lunch options. We follow the Food Pyramid for Kids ensuring the children have a well-balanced diet through the day. We believe that balance, variety and moderation of many foods is the best way for children to get nutrition.
Alphabetz is committed to enhancing family-food partnerships. To promote healthy eating habits, we engage children in fun activities, lesson plans and games. We also have a school garden which helps both parents and kids hands on learning experience of real healthy food and good nutrition. This also helps the kids to understand about environmental stewardship. Also, the children tend to be less picky when they learn to grow the food themselves.

Fresh Versus Processed Food

Fresh food or natural food has undergone a minimal amount of processing and contains no additives and preservatives. Fresh food scores high in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, (the good) carbohydrates, water, fiber, fatty acids, and much more. They are all optimal for an all-round development of a child. A wide range of food is considered processed food including cereals, potato chips, meat products, such as bacon, sausage, ham, salami, flavored nuts, microwave popcorn, fruit snacks, etc. Processed food contains ingredients like salt, sugar to enhance their visual appeal and to increase shelf life. These contain more than the required amount needed for a daily healthy meal. Processed food typically is high calorie food with little or no nutritional value to the body.
Processed food is considered a major catalyst to childhood obesity and diabetes. So the meals at Alphabetz are prepared using healthy options.

Every element of a meal is directed towards building independence and self-reliance. Meal time is integrated seamlessly with classroom teaching and practical life activities.
Meal time is given apt importance. A blessing before a meal is an ideal way to begin. We offer a relaxed atmosphere during meals that allows a child to eat at his own pace. When children dine together, they are in a social environment where more conversations are encouraged. These meal times are also learning opportunities to enhance language and communication skills.

Lunch and Snack Menu

We plan our weekly lunch and snack menu to include all elements of a daily nutritious meal. We emphasize on whole foods-based programs.
